When he created the saxophone, Adolphe Sax created them as a family, instead of adding on to the family as different sizes were needed. In total, he started with the sopranino, soprano, alto, tenor, baritone, bass, and contra bass saxophones. The purpose of this was to be able to have the saxophone sound be represented in in every register.

The saxophone is a relatively new instrument compared to many of the other musical devices that exist. It's history can be traced back over 150 years. It was invented by a man named Antoine-Joseph (Adolphe) Sax, an expert instrument maker and musician. This is obviously were the root of it's name.
